The 1946-47 Campo Alegre set is one of the tougher Cuban baseball card issues of the 1940s. The set contains 50 numbered cards, with an album they were meant to be glued into. When I was in Cuba around 20 years ago, I was told that there is also a second series that went from 51 to 100, that also had its own album. To this day I have never seen that album. It took several years before I saw even one "Series Two" card to know that they actually existed. As of right now, in the past 20 years since I started looking for them, I have seen a total of 9 different cards from the Series Two set, and 11 cards total. All of them are numbered between 51 and 61. The reason for their scarcity, and why there's never been a Campo Alegre card numbered higher than 61 ever to surface is a complete mystery. Needless to say, these are some of rarest cards in all of Cuban baseball collecting. And there are two of them in this auction. This lot features card #58 of Tony Zardon. A rare opportunity to pick up a nearly impossible type card.
