Prior to 2003, there were no known cards of the great Josh Gibson. In 2003, I was treasure hunting in Puerto Rico when I made the discovery of a lifetime. Not only did I find a Josh Gibson card, I found 5 of them! They were all in albums, 4 albums total with one album having two Gibsons in it. It wound up being a pretty big discovery within the hobby, and since my original find, quite a few other examples have surfaced, sometimes bringing close to 6 figures at auction.

The example in this auction was one of the original 5 from that discovery in 2003. Looking at it while it was still in the album, it seemed clear that this would be nicest one of the group. The image quality and color was better, the surface and overall card condition was better. It was going to be the cream of the crop. Imagine what goes through your head when you remove a gorgeous Josh Gibson card from an album and you turn it over only to find that some kid decided to doodle on the back before putting it in the album all those years ago. Fortunately, 1950-51 Toleteros cards have blank backs. It would have been much worse, in my opinion, if this kind of writing had been on a card with printing on the back. But some people simply cannot deal with that much writing on a card, even when it's on the reverse of a blank-back card, without their heads exploding. What that means is that anyone looking for a Josh Gibson card with AMAZING eye appeal (at least on the front) might have the perfect opportunity to pick one up here without breaking the bank. It's been graded a 3 (MK) by PSA. If you can live with writing on the reverse, this is truly a stunning card.
