This is the finest 1946-47 Caramelo Deportivo set on the planet. I personally put this set together and continued to upgrade, card by card, over the past 25 years. I've had about 10 examples of each to choose from, and with a few exceptions, each card in this set is the best one I've ever seen. There are 4 HOFers in the set, all Negro Leaguers. The highlight is Buck O'Neil, who only has two different cards. This example is the nicest one there is. You will not find a nice Martín Dihigo or Minnie Miñoso, either. The Ray Dandridge is nice, but I've seen a better one. The set includes all 185 cards, plus all three variations (Nap Reyes, Roberto Ortiz) for a total of 188 cards. An empty example of the album the cards were meant to be collected in is also included.

The set is made up of cards from all four teams in the regular Cuban League (Almendares, Habana, Cienfuegos, Marianao) as well as all four teams in the National Federation League (Habana Reds, Oriente, Camaguey, Matanzas). It is LOADED with Negro Leaguers. One that is particularly important is the first card of Don Newcombe. He is pictured in his Newark Eagles uniform, making his card one of the only playing days baseball cards to depict a Negro Leaguer in a Negro League uniform. The Newcombe card in this set is easily the nicest example there is. Other Negro Leaguers include Luis Tiant, Henry Kimbro, Hank Thompson, Max Manning, Lennie Pearson, Jim Lamarque, Terris McDuffie, Johnny Davis, Gentry Jessup, Len Hooker, Lloyd "Ducky" Davenport, Lloyd "Pepper" Bassett, Lefty Gaines, Booker McDaniels,  Bonnie Serrell, Silvio García, Pedro Pages, Pedro Formental, Ray Noble, Raúl Navarro, Heberto Blanco, Carlos Blanco, Cocaína García, Sagua Hernández, Pablo García, Julio Rojo, Avelino Cañizares, Norman Robinson, Lázaro Salazar, Hector Rodríguez, Jesse Williams, Mario Ariosa, Lorenzo Cabrera, Charolito Orta, Claro Duany, Bartolo Portuondo, Pedro Arango, Manuel Godínez, Johnny Williams, Leovigildo Xiqués, Chiflin Clark, Jacinto Roque, Amado Ibañez, Lino Donoso, José María Fernández, Cando Lopez, José Luis Colás, Rogelio Linares.

It should be noted that there are some examples that have received high grades from grading companies. Each one of these was cut from a sheet within the last 10 years. A handful of uncut sheets were discovered back in the 90s. There are 30 cards per sheet, with 3 examples on each sheet. The reason they were pulled at the factory and not cut is because all of the backs have very light printing, making them essentially defective. It's amazing that they weren't thrown away and survived all of those years. But people have been cutting them up and sending them to grading companies, often receiving unusually high grades for this set. None of those cards should have been graded, but grading companies are incredibly incompetent when it comes to Cuban cards. It's easy to tell which ones are cut from sheets by looking at how light the printing on the back is compared to a legit card. There are 3 HOFers (Dandridge, Dihigo, Miñoso) on each sheet, and there are three examples of each, so with 9 cards of HOFers on each sheet, greed took over and people starting cutting them up. All graded examples with high grades will be among the 30 different players found on these sheets, without exception. NONE of the cards in this lot come from these sheets. All are 100% legit.
